Google to ban ads promoting deepfake porn sites and apps

  • Google has announced an update to its policy regarding ads and linking to deepfake porn.
  • Starting from 30th May, it will ban such ads from its platforms.
  • This ban also applies to any ads that link to services that teach people how to create deepfake porn too.

While Google is unable to scrub all the deepfake porn from the internet, the tech giant is at least trying to limit people heading to websites and apps with such content by announcing an update to its policy for advertisements.

More specifically Google says it will ban any account holder or company that looks to serve ads linking to deepfake porn websites and apps on any of its platforms, with the update taking effect near the end of this month.

“In May 2024, the Google Ads Inappropriate content policy will be updated to prohibit promoting synthetic content that has been altered or generated to be sexually explicit or contain nudity. We will begin enforcing the policy update on May 30, 2024,” it explained in a support page post.

Google also noted that it would be taking a similar stance on any ads for, “sites or apps that claim to generate deepfake pornography, instructions on how to create deepfake pornography, endorsing or comparing deepfake pornography services.”

The company pointed out that any account holder or company that makes use of Google Ads that is seen to be in violation of this updated policy after 30th May, will see their account suspended immediately and without warning.

“We take violations of this policy very seriously and consider them egregious. If we find violations of this policy, we will suspend your Google Ads accounts upon detection and without prior warning, and you will not be allowed to advertise with us again,” the post continued.

While Google appears to be racing ahead with its AI plans on the Gemini side of things, it is at least good to see that it is taking steps to ensure that deepfake porn and the tools used to create them, are given less of a platform on the internet.

The scourge, however, remains, and more steps will need to be taken by Google and the like in order to reign in just how easy it is to create deepfake porn at the moment.
