Hinge wants to stop ghosting with new feature

  • Daters who leave matches on read will have their ability to like others restricted.
  • This as Hinge tests a new Your Turn Limit feature during May.
  • Daters will either have to respond to matches or close the conversation before they can like other users.

Dating app Hinge is trying something new to get users to respond to their matches. The app will now force users with eight or more people waiting for a response to make a choice – respond or end the conversation.

The platform says that according to its research, 44 percent of users cite lack of responsiveness as a top dating challenge. To address this, users will now have what Hinge calls a Your Turn Limit.

“With the launch of Your Turn Limits, we’re testing a new way to help our users focus on quality over quantity – keeping intentionality at the core of their dating experience,” writes founder and chief executive officer at Hinge, Justin McLeod.

“We’ve heard from daters how they’re feeling overwhelmed, distracted, and, simply put, burnt out. To help alleviate these challenges and get people on more great dates, we’re continuing to identify innovative solutions like Your Turn Limits.”

So what is this exactly?

When a user has eight or more people waiting for a response they will need to respond to those people before they can send more likes. The goal here is to push serial non-responders to respond and either continue the conversation or end it.

“In today’s dating world, it’s become far too normalized for people to send likes liberally and leave their conversations sitting, leading to feelings of dating burnout for people seeking relationships. With the Your Turn Limits test, we’re encouraging daters to keep the momentum going with their current conversations or properly close out a conversation to give the person on the other side the closure they need to continue their dating journey,” says chief product officer at Hinge, Stéphane Taine.

The dating app is testing Your Turn Limits globally throughout May. Once the test is complete, Hinge will assess feedback and iterate on the feature if needed. If successful, these limits will be imposed on more daters.

We’re curious to see how this affects Hinge’s user experience as to us, this sounds rather annoying. We wouldn’t be surprised if the number of matches a person has drops once they get these Your Turn Limit notifications.
