Huawei Pura 70 Ultra now the top ranked smartphone camera on DXOMARK

  • DXOMARK has released its latest rankings, with the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra achieving a top score overall score of 163.
  • The next closest device is the recently launched Magic6 Pro from Honor.
  • Three Huawei phones released within the past year are found in DXOMARK’s top five smartphone camera rankings.

Despite parting ways with Leica, and continued struggles in terms of dealing with the United States, it is clear that Huawei knows how to make a great smartphone camera, at least as far as DXOMARK is concerned.

This as the technology lab and reviewer gave the recently unveiled Huawei Pura 70 Ultra the highest score it has awarded to date for a smartphone camera’s overall performance.

“After a comprehensive review, renowned tech lab DXOMARK has crowned the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra as its top smartphone camera, awarding it a score of 163. The review highlighted the smartphone camera’s excellent colour accuracy, earning the phone a historic all-time high rating in the category as well as leading autofocus capabilities,” beamed Huawei in a release shared with Hypertext.

“Very versatile camera that provides best-in-class mobile photography experience to date,” noted DXOMARK at the top of its pros list for the device, which is the flagship model of the new Pura 70 series.

It was not perfect, however, with the technology had highlighting that some work can still be done in terms of video performance. “Uneven user experience when taking videos, due to instabilities and loss of image details, particularly in low light,” it explained as the only con in its report.

We experienced something similar with the Huawei P60 Pro that we tested out in Dubai last year, so it looks like there is one aspect that the company’s XMAGE photography division can focus on for a future device.

Speaking of Huawei devices, they rank quite highly in terms of DXOMARK scores, with the Mate 60 Pro+ and P60 Pro placing third and fifth respectively in terms of the technology lab’s rankings. The other devices in the top are the Honor Magic6 Pro and OPPO Find X7 Ultra, so Chinese phone makers are outclassing their South Korean and American counterparts, according to DXOMARK.

We’re expecting the Pura 70 Ultra to launch in South Africa within the next two months, so it will be interesting to see how it performs in-person when we get the chance to review it.
