SPEEDRUN – The wrong online threat could land you in prison

When you post something online, there is often the thought that no real-world harm will occur, but a recent event shows that not to the case. This as a man from De Aar in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to five years in prison for making an online threat to President Cyril Ramaphosa prior to his visiting the town.

“On Wednesday the South African Police Service (SAPS) welcomed the sentencing of Elrico Kaizer Kasper, a 38-year-old man from De Aar for Cyber Fraud. He has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment,” writes Brendyn Lotz, who covered this story for Hypertext.

“Back in March 2023, Kasper posted to social media that ‘some people’ were planning to assassinate President Cyril Ramaphosa during his Human Rights Day visit to De Aar,” he continues.

While this online threat involves an incident with the country’s head of state, it goes to show that simple strokes of a keyboard can lead to you being behind bars.

Along with the unique online threat story, for this morning’s SPEEDRUN roundup we’ve curated a review of a new mid-range phone launched this week, potential privacy concern’s about Microsoft’s new Recall feature, the investigation into the building collapse in George, and a look at the latest in the Mad Max universe.
