AMD says new Ryzen AI 300 Series surpass Copilot+ requirements

  • AMD revealed new Ryzen AI chipsets made for Copilot+ at Computer 2024.
  • The Ryzen AI 300 is said to have the world’s most powerful neural processing unit (NPU).
  • Up until now, only Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X CPUs have featured in Copilot+ laptops.

This week marks the start of the 2024 Computex conference in Taipei. Kicking off the event was silicon maker AMD with its keynote, featuring two new lineups – the Ryzen AI 300 series and Ryzen 900 series.

The former is made with Copilot+ laptops in mind, while the latter is intended for use in desktop PCs.

Like most chip manufacturers at the moment, AMD is focused on powering generative AI, and its new Ryzen AI 300 series does this at the personal computing level. AMD has even gone so far as to say that its new offerings feature, “the world’s most powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for next-gen AI PCs that pave the way for a future full of AI-infused computing directly on your laptop.”

To that end, the 300 series is built on the new AMD XDNA 2 architecture, the company confirms. This new NPU offers 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI processing power, which surpasses Copilot+ AI PC requirements which is benchmarked at 45 TOPS. AMD adds that it delivers three times the AI engine performance of the second generation of AMD Ryzen AI.

“Powered by new ‘Zen 5’ architecture, these processors come equipped with up to 12 high-performance CPU cores with 24 threads and 50% more on-chip L3 cache memory over previous gen ‘Zen 4’ processors for thin and light laptops. With advanced AI architecture and supercharged performance for elite gaming and productivity, the third gen Ryzen AI Series enables the ultimate in private, responsive, and intelligent laptop computing,” it shares in a press release.

Further breaking down the new silicon, AMD notes that the Ryzen AI 300 features a new RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture, and that these processors are equipped with the latest AMD Radeon 800M Series graphics designed to provide more fluid frame rates and AAA gaming.

“We are so excited to introduce the Ryzen 9000 series, the world’s most powerful desktop processors for gamers and creators, and the 3rd generation AMD Ryzen AI processors, which provide leadership AI and compute performance for ultrathin and premium Copilot+ PCs,” adds Jack Huynh, SVP and GM for the Computing and Graphics Group at AMD.

Specifications of the two new models of processor are as follows:

AMD has remained mum on which new laptops will be powered by the Ryzen AI 300 series, but Engadget points to the Asus ZenBook S 16, Asus Zephyrus G16, and MSI Stealth A16 AI+ as devices earmarked for July.

As such, in the coming months, Qualcomm will not be the only provider of silicon for Copilot+ laptops, so it will be interesting to see how Intel responds.
