International Standard Bank clients can now use Apple Pay

  • Standard Bank Offshore has launched Apple Pay support for its customers.
  • This means customers can now leave their cards in a safe location while out and about while still being able to make payments.
  • Apple Pay can be used on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac to make a variety of payments.

Customers with a Standard Bank Offshore account can now link their payment cards to their iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch and make use of Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is the iOS solution to contactless payments – Android has Google Wallet – and makes tapping your Apple device to pay a simple and convenient option. The feature makes using a physical card unnecessary which is important for international clients.

“This helps customers avoid handing their card to someone else, touching physical buttons or exchanging cash — and uses the power of iPhone to protect every transaction.   The main benefit to Standard Bank Offshore customers is that they avoid having to take their physical card with them when they are out and about, so Apple Pay is convenient, simpler and safer,” Standard Bank Offshore said in a press release.

As the bank highlights, Apple Pay doesn’t store the card number on the device. Instead when setting the contactless solution up, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and secured in the Secure Element. This is a certified chip that complies with industry standards and secures data safely.

“Once a customer adds a card to iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac, they can start using Apple Pay on that device right away. Customers will continue to receive all of the benefits offered by Standard Bank Offshore’s debit cards,” Standard Bank Offshore added.

The ability to tap to pay has become prevalent almost everywhere. Not only are contactless payment devices easily accessible, folks can even use a smartphone to facilitate transactions.

Later this year Apple will launch Tap to Pay where iPhone users can pay other iPhone users simply by tapping their phones together. This, like other Apple features, is bound to be copied by others and we suspect that being able to tap your phone to another will soon be a feature across a range of devices.

For now though, at least international Standard Bank clients have an easy payment solution.
