Month-long repairs to leave Johannesburg residents without water

  • Johannesburg residents should begin storing water ahead of a month-long maintenance plan that Rand Water is slated to execute.
  • From 22nd June to 29th July 2024, extensive maintenance will be conducted at key Rand Water infrastructure points.
  • This means that Johannesburg Water customers will have “low pressure to no water supply” during the month.

Residents of Johannesburg who receive water from Johannesburg Water (most of them) are now being reminded to store water ahead of a major slate of maintenance to be undertaken by Rand Water in late June.

From 22nd June to 29th July 2024, Rand Water says it will be conducting extensive maintenance across its infrastructure to “improve reliability and efficiency.”

“During this time, Johannesburg Water customers will be impacted by low pressure to no water supply,” the utility explains.

The maintenance will be focused on the Pamliet and Eikenhof pump stations, and the Daleside Booster Station.

This is relevant because the Eikenhof pump station services large swathes of the city with tap water. Earlier this year in March, a flash-over event at this particular pump station left it without power for weeks, leaving residents without any water for most of the month until repairs were made.

Residents across the city were affected by the outage. Now, with planned maintenance ahead for June, Johannesburg Water says that the Rand Water maintenance will impact its own systems, as well as other municipalities and industries.

This includes all Sandton and Midrand systems, the South Hills tower, as well as the Alexandra Park, Randjieslaagte, and Linksfield reservoirs.

“This kind of preventative maintenance is imperative to make Rand Water’s systems more efficient and reliable for their customers, such as Johannesburg Water” the water infrastructure firm explains, per SA News.

The company says it, “will make arrangements for alternative water supply at strategic areas like hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations and shopping centres. However, residents are encouraged to store water in preparation for the maintenance.”

Even though the maintenance is expected to end on 29th July, residents should be reminded that it takes several days for the pipes to fill up again, especially in areas of higher elevations.
