SPEEDRUN – Load reduction before loadshedding?

This week will prove a tough one for those in Johannesburg, as the temperature continues to drop, the municipality is putting load reduction measures in place to cope with the increased use of electricity while tempering a system that is under strain.

As the winter weather sets in even more, the prospect of loadshedding being a reality becomes even more likely.

“Load reduction will be implemented in 80 areas across Johannesburg, City Power says. These areas will be grouped into 6 blocks and the company says that during peak periods (04:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 and 22:00) rolling blackouts will occur,” wrote Luis Monzon while covering this story for Hypertext.

“These blackouts will not exceed more than two and a half hours per block, so it could be compared to Stage 2 loadshedding,” he added.

Along with load reduction being in effect across Johannesburg, other noteworthy stories we’ve curated for this morning’s SPEEDRUN roundup include Sebenza W-Fi and its connectivity plans for local taxis, a handheld Xbox console on the way, ramping up on production of driver’s licenses, and a pricey LEGO recreation of an Italian supercar.
