Anthropic launches Claude chatbot on Android

  • Anthropic has announced the availability of its Claude app on Android devices.
  • The app features the company’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet model.
  • It will also support use across Android, iOS, and web, with users capable of picking up and continuing conversations on any of the three platforms.

Anthropic is making its Claude chatbot app available on more platforms, as this week it has landed on Android.

The generative AI startup confirmed in a blog post that its most powerful model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, is available to Android users via the Play Store. It added that the Claude chatbot is free to use on any of Anthropic’s plans, including the Pro and Team tiers.

Anthropic debuted Claude 3.5 Sonnet last month, noting that it sets several benchmarks in terms of generative AI platform performance.

“Claude 3.5 Sonnet operates at twice the speed of Claude 3 Opus. This performance boost, combined with cost-effective pricing, makes Claude 3.5 Sonnet ideal for complex tasks such as context-sensitive customer support and orchestrating multi-step workflows,” the startup shared.

“When instructed and provided with the relevant tools, Claude 3.5 Sonnet can independently write, edit, and execute code with sophisticated reasoning and troubleshooting capabilities. It handles code translations with ease, making it particularly effective for updating legacy applications and migrating codebases,” it added.

The video below highlights what Claude 3.5 Sonnet can do on web, with Anthropic also noting that users can pick up and continue conversations on any of the platforms that the Claude chatbot is available on, which currently sits at Android, iOS, and web browser.

Other features available via the Claude chatbot on Android include:

  • Vision capabilities: Take new pictures or upload files for real-time image analysis
  • Multilingual processing: Real-time language translation to help communicate or translate aspects of the world around you
  • Advanced reasoning: Claude can help you tackle complex problems, like analyzing contracts while traveling or conducting market research to prepare for a meeting.”

For those interesting in trying out the chatbot, it is available to download for free, but there are in-app purchases that rise up to R399.99, according to the App Info listed on Google Play Store. The Info also notes that an Android smartphone running the 8.0 (Oreo) operating system or higher is needed, but no mention of hardware requirements.

It will be interesting to see how Android users make use of the platform, especially as reports suggest YouTube content was illegally accessed by Anthropic and other generative AI companies to train their respective models.

With Google owning the Android ecosystem, as well as the YouTube platform, the company would be well within its rights to take action against those training models without proper authority, if the reports are indeed true.
