On Monday, Chinese manufacturer HONOR announced that its HONOR 200 Lite 5G smartphone is now in South Africa, accompanied by its local price and where in the country you can buy the device.

We recently reviewed the smartphone, the first big release from HONOR South Africa for the second half of the year. We found a solid mid-ranger that performs well for its price tag, but it is weighed down by its bloated software offerings.

HONOR 200 Lite 5G Specifications

From the specifications, the HONOR 200 Lite 5G is a well-rounded offering from the brand, especially for its price in South Africa. Performance-wise, 8GB of RAM and the MediaTek chip work well in hand and performance is smooth due to the good calibration of the smartphone.

You can also enable a turbo-mode that boots the RAM performance by another 8GB, which may be key for those looking to use the HONOR 200 Lite for gaming.

Camera-wise, the device offers a 108MP primary snapper, a 5MP wide-angle lens and it is capable of 2MP macro. We found that the device shines in the camera department, especially the 108MP camera which is finely tuned for capturing rich detail.

Software-wise in the camera array, we have options like Normal and Hi-Res shooting mods, as well as a function to automatically edit images with AI. The AI here makes colour more vibrant, but it is very subtle which may disappoint some users wanting more of an impact.

Officially, HONOR is making a big deal of the now AI-powered MagicOS 8.0 and the Magic Portal functionality. The company says that this software “takes convenience to new heights” but in our time with the handset, the well-price specification offering and the aesthetics of the device are only really weighed down by HONOR’s on-device software.

Many of the on-device apps are not necessary, and many simply cannot be deleted so it just bloats your phone with features that you will never really need to use and instead remain on your screen as little annoyances.

According to the brand, the HONOR 200 Lite 5G is now available at your nearest retailer or network provider in two colours: Starry Blue and Midnight Black.

The price of the HONOR 200 Lite 5G in South Africa is R9 999, with HONOR sweetening the deal with gifts inside the box including HONOR’s SuperCherger, charging cable, screen protector, as well as a 180-day warranty. The company says these extras amount to R2 499 in value.
