One of the fastest growing sports globally in recent years has been Formula 1, with big tech companies getting involved with racing on the track and the behind the scenes action making for great streaming on Netflix.
As such, given the country’s past with F1 races being hosted at Kyalami several decades ago, the return of Formula 1 to South Africa is a prospect that all motoring fans would be keen on.
Minister of Sports, Art and Culture, Gayton McKenzie is of the same opinion.
When asked about bringing Formula 1 back to SA over the weekend, he was buoyant regarding the prospect and his ability to make it happen. He said his, “term will be a failure if I don’t bring one of the biggest sporting tourist events to South Africa which is F1.”
There are several elements to consider before Formula 1 can return, such as the costs involved with hosting, as well as the improvements to infrastructure needed to make an event of such scale possible.
If McKenzie can make it happen, it would indeed be a coup, but only time will tell if the minister can make it a reality.
Along with Formula 1 dreams for SA, this morning’s SPEEDRUN roundup has curated news including an animated adaptation of a Nigerian graphic novel, Ubisoft needed to explain itself again, Xero bringing back its small business fund, and Google walking back a decision years in the making.
