- The 2024 edition of the Emmy Awards has come and gone and Shogun came out of the ceremony and creative arts portion as the biggest winner
- The Bear and Baby Reindeer were the other major successes of the awards, again showing the dominance of streaming on television.
- Comedian Lamorne Morris was just as surprised by his Emmy win as we were.
It was a streaming-heavy Emmy Awards in 2024, with FX shows The Bear and Shogun receiving the most nominations, and most of the major streaming platforms from Netflix, Apple TV+, Prime Video, HBO Max and Peacock well represented across the categories.
If you’re a fan of TV watching, and we’d venture you are if you clicked this article, then you may be surprised that a show that is 80 percent in Japanese with subtitles was the biggest winner for the 2024 Emmy Awards, with Shogun taking home 18 awards in what is being considered a record-setting haul.
The show, streaming on Disney+ for South Africans, also took home the coveted Best Drama award, which is not a surprise for us. Shogun also netted awards for Best Drama Actor and Actress for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai and in the process saw the pair become the first Japanese-born actors to win Emmys.
Sanada beat out a heck of a number of established Hollywood actors for the prize, including Idris Elba, Donald Glover, the fantastic Walton Goggins and finally the legendary Garry Oldman. In his victory speech, an emotional Sanada, who portrays the titular Shogun, said that the show was an example of what can be accomplished if we put aside our cultural and national differences.
He took to the podium later in the evening to accept Best Drama for the show.
What actually is surprising is the number of awards that the limited Netflix series Baby Reindeer took home.
We loved the seven-episode miniseries and raved about it when it launched in April. It won Best Limited Series, as well as Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Writing for its category.
While Shogun won many of the awards in the Drama category, its FX compatriot The Bear was taking home Comedy awards, including Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, as well as awards for directing, and Guest Actors with Jamie-Lee Curtis and (he’ll always be The Punisher to us) Jorn Bernthal getting the nod.
Another big surprise was New Girl-famous funny man Lamorne Morris taking home the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Fargo, beating out the likes of Robert Downey Jr for the award. You can see by his reaction to the win that he was expecting it as much as we were – that is to say, not at all.
Congrats to Winnie the Bish.
