- Talk of a mobile Destiny game have been reignited by a single post on X.
- Destiny Rising is reportedly still in development by Bungie and NetEase, a well known China-based mobile game developer.
- These reports should be approached with caution given the large amount of layoffs Bungie has executed in the last 12 months.
Despite laying off hundreds of workers in little less than a year, Bungie is working on a mobile Destiny game.
This is according to Kurakasis, a person calling themselves a “video game researcher” over on the Elon website.
While some have reported that the user “has a track record of sharing insider information for upcoming video game releases”, we’re not so sure of those credentials. The person does seem to have an inside track in the industry, but their most recent reports of a Final Fantasy mobile game haven’t borne fruit as of yet. As such, we’ll heed what they say, but wouldn’t take their reports to the bank.
We’re approaching the post above with a tremendous amount of salt and caution then as it doesn’t seem as if Bungie is really in a position to take a gamble on a mobile game. However, Kurakasis is adamant that their information is good.
“Based on what I’ve read, none of them have confirmed with absolute certainty that NetEase’s mobile game has been canceled [sic]. I can assure you that it is still in development,” the researcher told a user who asked about previous reports from Paul Tassi and Jason Schreier that a rumoured mobile game was dead in the water.
Unfortunately Kurakasis doesn’t say where they’re getting this information from. It could be insiders but we simply don’t know and a lack of a source means we’re hesitant to believe them.
After this rumour resurfaced, Tassi did post to X that he wasn’t surprised a mobile game still existed within Bungie’s halls but again, a source from Kurakasis would be nice.
It’s no secret that Destiny 2 is bleeding players, especially veterans who are tired of the same content cycle and little to no innovation within the game as well as a lack of information about the future of the game. A mobile game could keep the franchise alive as Bungie shifts focus toward Marathon but could is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
Mention of NetEase also has player’s backs up. The Chinese developer is well known for its mobile games and perhaps more so its love for microtransactions. However, the developer does make games people enjoy, and titles such as Marvel Rivals are drenched in hype.
What a Destiny mobile game would look like is also up for debate. While a first-person shooter would make sense, we doubt the movement and gunplay that made the series so popular would translate onto a mobile platform. That having been said, Call of Duty Mobile has shown us that a good FPS on mobile isn’t impossible so perhaps Bungie and NetEase could stick with an FPS.
The worst thing Bungie could do is turn Destiny into a card game like Blizzard did with Hearthstone and Valve did with Artifact. Card games can be lucrative for a developer if done right but its been years since a new card game did well and competing against Marvel Snap sounds like a Herculean task for any developer.
As we mentioned, we’re taking news of a Destiny mobile game with a large amount of scepticism, even if it sounds exactly like something an ailing developer would do to bring in some capital. Something has to be there to fund Pete Parsons love of buying classic cars after all.
