Metalhead – Logitech’s best mouse gets an upgrade

  • The G502 X Plus AL Edition is an aluminium iteration of Logitech’s iconic mouse.
  • Only 502 models will be made and won’t be sold but rather awarded, earned or gifted by Logitech G.
  • The company says the mouse is made with a material that will “develop a unique patina over years of use”.

The Logitech G502 is, at least in the Hypertext office, considered to be one of the best PC peripherals we have ever used. Its plethora of buttons, side-scrolling wheel and adjustable weight are marquee features, and it lasts.

Now, Logitech is refreshing the mouse for a special 10 Year Anniversary edition. Unfortunately, only 502 units will be available for purchase.

The G502 X Plus AL Edition is made using “ultra-durable aircraft-grade aluminium alloy”.

“Each mouse is CNC machined precisely, adhering to standards comparable to those of the Swiss watchmaking industry. This level of precision and attention to detail is a testament to our commitment to quality and excellence. The result is a tactile experience that is smooth to the touch, with a material that will develop a unique patina over years of use, reflecting the individual journey of its owner,” writes Logitech G’s chief marketing officer, Peter Kingsley.

We have to hand it to the Logitech spin PR department, describing the wear and tear the mouse will experience as a “unique patina” is one helluva marketing effort. In fact we’re very curious about what this mouse would look like after a year of use.

Each G502 X Plus AL Edition will have a laser-branded serial number ranging from 1 to 502 and will feature AL graphics, AL here seemingly meant to mean aluminium even though the metal is known as Al in the periodic table.

Because of the limited number of peripherals, the G502 X Plus AL Edition won’t be available for purchase and can only be awarded, earned or gifted by Logitech G. How one gets such a gift is unclear.

“For those lucky enough to secure one of these rare pieces, the G502 X Plus AL Edition is not just a gaming mouse —it is a piece of history, a celebration of ten years of gaming excellence, and a promise of more to come. It symbolizes our past achievements and our commitment to continue pushing the boundaries of gaming technology,” Kingsley concludes.

If you’re looking for a new mouse and can’t wait to be awarded a metal G502, may we recommend the G502 X or even just the base G502.
