With August done and dusted, another Women’s Month has passed. We saw several initiatives being launched over the past few weeks, including the Huawei Women in Tech Digital Skills Training Programme for 2024.
Having started four years ago, this 2024 iteration marked the first time that the event was in-person, with a two-day long training programme that looked at key technologies like 5G, and AI, as well as developing leadership skills among the roughy 30 South African women involved.
We were on hand on day two of the programme, which was held at Henley Business School Africa, a partner for this year’s event. There, we spoke with four women, to find out how initiatives like this are spun up, what skills are key for South African women in tech, and whether enough is being done to move the needle on this critical need.
Hypertext interviewed the following women for this latest episode of The Discourse:
- Vanashree Govender, senior manager for Media and Communications at Huawei,
- Christine Williams, faculty lecturer and fellow at Henley Business School,
- Mimi Bulelwa Tau, director for ICT International Affairs at the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT),
- Eve Lavhengwa, director for Internal Audit at the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources.
