10 horrors you have to stream this month

While local horror fans continue to wait patiently for the day streaming platform Shudder arrives in South Africa, they can find a treasure trove of horror content to stream online this October.

While Halloween only happens at the end of the month, both Netflix and Showmax have come out swinging when it comes to movies and series for the month. Netflix has an entire Halloween category which is filled with content that goes bump in the night.

We’ve selected 10 horrors for you to add to your watchlist for this month as well as some honourable mentions.

Five Nights at Freddy’s – Showmax (14th October)

From horror masterminds Blumhouse comes the film adaptation of a game that launched the careers of several YouTubers. Creator of the games Scott Cawthon helped write the script that Emma Tammi directed. The film stars Josh Hutcherson as the security guard who discovers all is not what it seems at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Saw X – Showmax (31st October)

Tobin Bell reprises the iconic role of John Kramer in the tenth bloody film in the Saw franchise. Directed by Kevin Greutert, Jigsaw is still fighting cancer and heads to Mexico, renewing his bloodlust and love for games. Sure, it’s just another bloody affair in a very confusing timeline of movies but it’ll make for some good viewing on All Hallow’s Eve.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter – Showmax (14th October)

A crew travelling across the Black Sea to England with dangerous cargo learn just how evil that cargo is and how doomed their ship, the Demeter is. André Øvredal is the director here and Liam Cunningham plays Demeter’s Captain Eliot. If you’re in the mood for vamps and can stomach the red stuff, put this one in your calendar.

Halloween (2018) – Netflix (1st October)

Despite there being several films within the Halloween franchise, Halloween from 2018 is the official sequel to the original film. Halloween (2018) picks up years after the original film with Laurie Strode having to face her murderous foe. David Gordon Green directs Jamie Lee Curtis as Strode and Will Patton as Officer Hawkins. Halloween Kills is also on Netflix if you want to watch both modern sequels this Halloween. To round out the trilogy, Halloween Ends is currently on Prime Video

CTRL – Netflix (4th October)

What happens when you use an AI to get back at your cheating boyfriend and erase him from your life? Terrible things. CTRL lands on Netflix later this week and the cyber-thriller looks rather good. Nella and Joe are the perfect influencer couple until he cheats and she turns to AI, then the AI takes control of her life entirely.

The Platform 2 – Netflix (17th October)

The Platform was a fantastic Netflix Original we think too many people missed out on. The film is now getting a sequel and hopefully we will learn a bit more about the prison with the most harrowing feeding scheme we’ve ever seen. Things have changed a bit from the first film but we still expect horror, gore and a lot more.

Don’t Move – Netflix (25th October)

A women exploring Big Sur runs into a serial killer who has flooded her body with poison. With just 20 minutes to live, Kelsey Asbille as Iris must escape before her body shuts down.

Alien Collection – Disney+

Now we’re going back, quite a way actually. Alien and all the sequels and prequels it has inspired are available to stream through Disney+. Sadly, Romulus isn’t available yet but you can expect it to hit digital storefronts later this month on 15th October and you can complete the full series.

Nope – Prime Video

We’ve tried every way to describe this movie without spoiling it and we simply can’t do it without spoiling some. Jordan Peele’s Nope is a unique film just don’t dive in if you’re of a sensitive disposition. Otherwise we highly recommend you give it a watch.

The Belko Experiment – Prime Video

We were shocked to discover that Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment was on Prime Video. Starring Tony Goldwyn as Barry Norris, Adria Arjona as Leandra Florez and John C McGinley as Wendell Dukes, this is one gory film to round out our list. American employees of Belko Industries are locked in a company building in Colombia and ordered to kill or be killed.

Honourable mentions:

  • The Black Phone – Prime Video
  • Wolf Creek – Prime Video
  • Scream VI – Netflix
  • Ready Or Not – Disney+
  • The Pope’s Exorcist – Netflix
  • The Hills Have Eyes – Disney+
  • Knock At The Cabin – Showmax
  • Final Destination – Showmax
