- Green Day has decided that instead of remastering its iconic third album, it will tear it down.
- Dookie Demastered is a set of 15 items each featuring one-ish track from the album.
- The items include a doorbell, a teddy bear and a wax cylinder.
30 years ago Green Day released its third album, Dookie. The album released on 1st February 1994 and featured what would become smash hits that still receive airplay to this day including Basket Case and When I Come Around.
The band did release a 30th Anniversary Box set for the album, but now it’s leaning full into the nostalgia of the 90s by demastering the tracks and placing them on items you wouldn’t expect.
Dookie Demastered is a collection of 15 items each featuring a track from the original album. The items and associated tracks include:
- Burnout – Player Piano Roll,
- Having a Blast – Floppy Disk,
- Chump – Teddy Ruxpin,
- Longview – Doorbell,
- Welcome to Paradise – Game Boy Cartridge,
- Pulling Teeth – Toothbrush,
- Basket Case – Big Mouth Billie Bass,
- She – Hitclip,
- Sassafras Roots – 8-Track,
- When I Come Around – Wax Cylinder,
- Coming Clean – X-ray Record,
- Emenius Sleepus – Answering Machine,
- In The End – Minidisc,
- F.O.D – Fisher Price Record,
- All By Myself – Music Box.
Prices for each item vary from $19 for the Floppy Disk to $99 for the Teddy Ruxpin teddy bear. As you may imagine, each item is a limited edition and the quantities depend on the track in question. When I Come Around’s Wax Cylinder for example, is limited to five items.
You won’t just be able to buy these outright though. First you’ll need to enter a draw and if your name is drawn, you’ll be able to purchase one or more of the items. Registration is open for the next day so head to the official Dookie Demastered website and register now.
“Instead of smoothing out its edges and tweaking its dynamic ranges, this version of Dookie has been meticulously mangled to fit on formats with uncompromisingly low fidelity, from wax cylinders to answering machines to toothbrushes. The listening experience is unparalleled, sacrificing not only sonic quality, but also convenience, and occasionally entire verses,” reads a note on the website.
We don’t say this lightly but, this is pretty punk rock. We love the toothbrush and doorbell but we’d really love the Big Mouth Billie Bass, even if there are countless tutorials online that we could follow to make our own.
Speaking of Green Day, the band will be performing in South Africa next year alongside The Offspring, and Fokofpolisiekar at Calabash 2025.
