HP wants you to make a game that celebrates South Africa’s heritage

  • HP and RGB Gaming have teamed up to host a game development hackathon.
  • Participants are tasked with creating a game that celebrates South Africa’s heritage.
  • The top ten participants will show off their creations at rAge later this year.

Here’s something great for local game developers hoping to make a name for themselves. HP and RGB Gaming have announced the GameOn with HP Gaming Garage Hackathon.

The hackathon challenges teams to design a game that celebrates South Africa’s heritage. The challenge is aimed exclusively at higher education students and game developers over 18 years old.

“We are thrilled to bring the GameOn with HP Gaming Garage hackathon to life, giving game development enthusiasts 18+ a fantastic platform to unleash their creativity and contribute to game development in a meaningful way. We can’t wait to see how these young minds incorporate elements of South African culture into their creations,” says co-founder of RGB Gaming, Jaco Sauer.

Team registrations are currently open and close later this month on 20th October. Should your team’s registration be accepted you will then need to complete the HP Gaming Garage Course on EdX before 10th November. From there, a game prototype will need to be submitted and the judges will select 10 developers to appear at rAge on 29th and 30th November.

From those 10, three winners will be selected with prizes up for grabs. In order to win, finalists will need to have created a playable PC game.

“HP is committed to walking the talk when it comes to empowering the next generation of talent. The GameOn with HP Gaming Garage hackathon, launched on Heritage Day, gives South African university students a real-world platform to apply their skills and celebrate their rich heritage. By blending culture, creativity, and coding, students can showcase their potential and contribute to the gaming industry,” says Mayank Dhingra, Senior Education Business Leader at HP.

As mentioned, registration closes on 20th October so head here and get cracking on completing that so you can begin the HP Gaming Garage Course. We’re keen to see what sort of games get selected to appear at rAge later this year.
