MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9400 is optimised for edge-AI and gaming

  • MediaTek has unveiled its latest flagship chipset – the Dimensity 9400.
  • The new 4nm processor is designed to work with AI applications at the edge and intensive mobile games.
  • The Dimensity 9400 is expected to feature in new devices during Q4 this year.

MediaTek has a new flagship smartphone chipset in the form of the Dimensity 9400. It also happens to the fourth such offering within this particular flagship silicon lineup for the company.

The Taiwanese outfit is also touting several improvements on the performance side of things, as well as noting that the Dimensity 9400 is better equipped to handle AI-related applications and more intensive mobile gaming.

As for how it does so, MediaTek notes that this 3nm chipset is the second-generation of All Big Core design offerings from the company, built on Arm’s v9.2 CPU architecture, as well as combining with the most advanced GPU and NPU it has integrated to date to tackle both performance and power efficiency.

Diving deeper into its design, the Dimensity 9400 features an Arm Cortex-X925 core which operates at over 3.62GHz. This is combined with three Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek says this offers 35 percent faster single-core performance and 28 percent faster multi-core performance compared to the previous generation flagship chipset. The 3nm chipset is also up to 40 percent more power-efficient than its predecessor.

“The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will continue furthering our mission to be the enablers of AI, supporting powerful applications that anticipate users’ needs and adapt to their preferences, while also fueling generative AI technology with on-device LoRA training and video generation,” noted Joe Chen, president at MediaTek, in a release sent to Hypertext.

In order to deliver the aforementioned AI support, the new chipset packs MediaTek’s 8th generation NPU. This has reportedly yielded a number of industry firsts, such as being the first mobile chipset to offer on-device LoRA training, on-device video generation, and developer support for Agentic AI

In terms of AI-supporting performance, the Dimensity 9400 offers up to 80 percent faster large language model (LLM) prompt performance, along with being up to 35 percent more power efficient than the Dimensity 9300.

“The Dimensity 9400 also integrates MediaTek’s new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), which is designed to turn traditional AI applications into sophisticated agentic AI applications. MediaTek is working with developers to offer a unified interface between AI agents, third-party APKs, and models that efficiently run both edge AI and cloud services,” the company added.

Shifting to the mobile gaming functionality, a 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 is present, delivering up to 40 percent faster raytracing performance compared to the previous generation. The chipset’s powerful GPU offers a 41 percent peak performance boost with up to 44 percent power savings too.

Other notable elements include support for WiFi 7, with up to 7.3Gbps data rates and up to 50 percent lower power consumption. Added to this is 5G/4G dual SIM dual active functionality, as well as support for tri-fold smartphones.

Speaking of smartphones, MediaTek says the Dimensity 9400 will feature in some new flagship devices in Q4 2024 already, although no particular OEM or vendor was mentioned at time of writing.
