MTN promises bumper year-end deals, here’s how to start winning

  • MTN South Africa is readying itself to launch a number of deals to cape off the year.
  • In the meantime, it has launched R75 million in prizes to promote its data and other products.
  • MTN struggled during 2024 with a poor performance in Nigeria, but South Africa continues to be a strong market for the company.

As we’re rapidly approaching the end of the year, and especially November and Black Friday, companies are starting to roll out big specials and deals to cap off 2024, and one of these is MTN. The big yellow telecom group is promising its customers “good times, good stuff, and good deals” to mark its 30th anniversary.

While more deals and specials around data prices, airtime and connectivity are soon to be launched “over the next few weeks”, MTN says in a press release, that it has begun rolling out a slate of prizes for South African customers, including hourly 1 GB prizes, R90 000 daily prizes, R300 000 weekly prizes and an ultimate R3 million grand prize.

“At MTN, we believe that we all deserve a winning summer to celebrate our wins. Our nation deserves winning deals, discounts, and experiences. MTN is bringing you hourly, daily and weekly wins as well as a grand prize of R3 million. Summer Fun is around the corner and MTN is ready to make many South Africans winners, KeDezemba” says Robyn Lewis, brand and marketing head for MTN South Africa.

Want to get into the MTN winnings? Here’s how:

Up to 500 customers can start winning free 1GB data bundles every hour in what the company calls “fastest finger data bundle purchase.”

Or, 30 customers can win R3 000 every day, with another 30 more potentially winning R10 000 every week. The grand prize will see 10 customers win R300 000 each in daily and weekly draws. To begin the process first opt into the competition on the MTN App or on *142#.

MTN customers need to buy 1GB or more for their chance to win a share of the R75 million in prizes. The more GBs you buy, the better your chances of winning – every 1GB purchase is an entry into the competition.

A monthly 1GB data bundle at MTN currently retails for R80, a weekly bundle for 1.2GB is R60, while a three-day 1.5GB bundle is R42.50. If you’re dead set on having a lot of entries into the competition, the R80 or R60 options will likely be the best. Or if you use a lot of data, this competition is for you.

Or if you don’t need to buy data, MTN says you can still take part.

All Postpaid and MyMTN Home customers qualify for 2 weekly entries into the cash prize draw, plus, if MyMTN Home customers buy any Speed Recovery or Booster Bundle, they qualify for 2 weekly entries into the cash prize draw.

In addition, customers who buy or upgrade to either a 24 or 36-month contract will receive 30GB of promotional data.

The prizes are essentially a R75 million investment to drive data purchases into the new year. MTN Group as a whole struggled in 2024, with decreased revenues across the continent and a businessing found floundering thanks to a disastrous performance in Nigeria.

South Africa is still a growing market for MTN, and it will likely seek to drive local business more aggressively in the near future to recoup some of those losses.
