Netflix cancels a show we really didn’t expect it to

  • After just a month online, Netflix has reportedly cancelled Kaos.
  • The star-studded show didn’t perform poorly, but seemingly didn’t meet Netflix’s high expectations.
  • No official reason has been given for the cancellation.

When the trailer for Kaos, starring Jeff Goldblum, dropped toward the end of August we thought it was intriguing. The show’s whimsical portrayal of the Greek Pantheon looked interesting and seemed to be successful.

The show featured a star-studded cast including David Thewlis as Hades, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, and Janet McTeer as Hera. The show was created by Charlie Covell and while it may not have scratched the American Gods itch, it wasn’t all that bad.

Now, according to Variety, Kaos has been cancelled. This is surprising because the show was well received by critics and viewers alike. It spent a good few weeks on the Netflix Top 10 and it amassed 5.9 million views within a week of release.

That seemingly wasn’t enough for Netflix, especially since the likes of Love is Blind Season 7 has brought in 5.2 million views in a shorter space of time.

However, the news that Kaos has been cancelled is very surprising for two reasons. For one, the show had one season to make a splash. For another, the show has been out for little over a month, barely enough time for it to really gain traction.

This says to us, and many others, that even if a show on Netflix is good, it may not make beyond one season if it only brings in a few million views. As a viewer that makes us hesitant to engage with original Netflix content because we may find something we enjoy only for it to be cancelled as soon as we finish the episode.

Kaos joins That 90s Show, Dead Boy Detectives, Mindhunters and countless others on the “Cancelled” pile somewhere in Netflix HQ. The rate of cancellations is simply bizarre as these shows have barely had time to find an audience.

We understand that not every Netflix original is going to be a banger, but cancelling a show one month after release? That just seems like Netflix’s trigger finger is too sensitive.

Fans of Nobody Wants This, a brand new show on the platform will be pleased to know that it’s performing incredibly well and as such, may not meet the same fate as Kaos. Then again, what do we know, we’re talking about the platform that cancelled Mindhunters suddenly and without warning afterall.

While we have you, let us know which streaming platform you feel is best in the X poll below. For this month’s Geeks Love Lists we’re looking to declare which streaming platform is best and we look forward to telling you why its actually Apple TV+.
