- Netflix is trying a talk show once again, this time with John Mulaney.
- The comedian has a strong relationship with the platform earning two Emmys from specials on Netflix.
- The talk show will arrive on Netflix in early 2025.
Netflix is no stranger to talk shows. It has tried the format before albeit with its own spin. There was David Letterman’s My Next Guest which was well received and Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Act (which was wrongly cancelled) and that’s really it, aside from one off specials with the likes of Oprah Winfrey and comedian John Mulaney’s Everybody’s In LA. We’re also still sore about the cancelling of Hasan Minhaj’s show.
The latter in those examples, Mulaney, is set to feature more prominently on Netflix thanks to a new deal. The former Saturday Night Live writer will receive his own weekly talk show on the streaming platform in 2025.
“I’m really excited about it”, Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix, said at the Bloomberg Screentime event this week per Variety. “So for next year, for 2025, we’re doing a variety live talk show with John Mulaney, which I’m super excited about.”
The exec notes that Netflix and Mulaney already have a well established relationship. Aside from the talk show, his comedy specials Baby J and Kid Gorgeous won Emmy awards. Of course, Netflix is well aware that talk shows don’t tend to last but regardless of that history it thinks Mulaney doing it live will be the difference maker.
The talk show will be hosted by the comedian and he will also reportedly serve as showrunner and executive producer through his company Multiple Camera Productions. Details are sparse by it’s said to premiere in early 2025. The comedian is currently in a Broadway play until January so don’t expect this talk show before then.
Netflix has been pushing the live aspect of its content for a while with a few sporting events, an eating contest and others. It’s also set to add live wrestling to the mix soon so a talk show may not be the worst idea. In fact, a live section of Netflix would be great to make it easier to find that content.
We’re curious to find out if Mulaney will be the sauce that Netflix needs to establish a foothold in the talk show space. He’s in good company with former Saturday Night alumni littering the talk space on broadcast TV so perhaps Netflix will have a winner at last.
