Offline Backup is a way for Spotify users to listen to music sans downloading

  • Spotify has begun rolling out a new Offline Backup feature for when you don’t have internet connectivity.
  • Offline Backup automatically creates playlists from recently listened to songs or those waiting in queue.
  • Spotify says the new feature does not make use of additional data or storage.

A week after announcing the expansion of its AI Playlist beta, Spotify has announced a new feature that will be made available to all of its premium subscribers in the form of Offline Backup.

As the name suggests, the new feature is designed for subscribers to keep listening to music even if they lose internet connection, such as when they’re flying and have airplane mode active on their smartphone.

Available on the Android and iOS version of Spotify, the new feature takes queued and recently streamed songs to create a playlist that you can listen to sans connectivity.

“We include tracks already stored on your device as part of your regular listening on Spotify (also known as cache). If you’re looking for a certain vibe, you can filter and sort songs within the playlist by artist, mood, and even genre—and Offline Backup evolves as you continue to listen, so you’ll always have something new,” Spotify explained in a blog post.

“For the times that you forget to download your favorite audio, Offline Backup gives you another way to access music without using any extra data or storage,” it added.

The streaming platform also confirmed that the new feature will begin rolling out on Android and iOS this week, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Once it does roll out to South Africa users, it is used as follows:

  • “Offline Backup will appear automatically in the Home feed anytime you’re offline.
  • Make sure you’ve listened to more than five songs recently and have offline listening enabled. Find this under Settings and then Data Saving and Offline or Storage. Look for the Offline Listening toggle.
  • You can add Offline Backup to Your Library for easy access at any time.”

Spotify also confirmed that you need to have the most up-to-date version of the app in order to access this new feature.
