Prime Video’s God of War series gets new producer

  • Ronald D. Moore has been named as a lead producer on the God of War series currently being developed for Amazon Prime Video.
  • His appointment comes only a few days after some development talent left the project.
  • The series will focus on the 2018 iteration of the game which sees Kratos immersed in Norse mythology.

The development of the God of War series for Amazon Prime Video hit a snag last week with three executive producers key to the creation of the project deciding to leave.

While Sony TV, which is helming operations for the series has not found replacements for all three, it has added one critical member in the form of Ronald D. Moore, per Deadline.

According to the publication, Moore will be taking over as executive producer and showrunner, or lead producer for a more South African parlance, with a role in the writing department earmarked too.

The latter element may prove the most crucial, as multiple script revisions has been cited as the cause for the aforementioned departures.

While we understand that the team behind the project will want to put their own interpretations on things, given that the God of War series will focus on the 2018 iteration of the game, which is easily some of the best story telling in the franchise, one would think the scripts almost write themselves, but this does not seem to be case.

As for Moore’s writing credentials, his past works include Battlestar Galactic, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Mission Impossible II, with his other contributions in recent series including Outlander, and For All Mankind.

None of the above really fits in with the style or tone of a formerly vengeful Greek god going toe-to-toe with the largest figures in Norse mythology.

With the development of the series encountering several problems already before any kind of casting rumours have circulated, we can only hope that Moore’s appointment ushers in a steadying of the ship, especially given how critical a successful God of War series would be for any other future PlayStation IP-related projects from Sony TV.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what a live-action version of Kratos will look like, and whether the team behind the project can capture the same magic that the more recent games did.
