While it may have been a well established event in the United States, Black Friday is a rather recent development in South Africa.
Sales have occupied the end of the year for decades, but Takealot takes credit for hosting the first Black Friday sale in South Africa. Today the online retailer is one of thousands of businesses that host sales on the last Friday of the month.
However, more often than not, Black Friday brings with it disappointment for South Africans. While legend tells of TVs and other electronics being discounted significantly on the day, the same isn’t true or rather it hasn’t been for a few years. Items that are deeply discounted are generally off-brand or old stock that needs to be moved in anticipation of the festive season stock refresh.
