Last year at the vivo V27 launch in Rosebank, Johannesburg, Collin Hazel, vivo’s Key Account Manager for South Africa told Hypertext that flagship smartphones were soon to launch locally, as well as the brand’s foldable offerings.
On Monday, chipmaker MediaTek announced that vivo’s next flagship smartphone in Africa would be the vivo X200 Pro, as well as the rest of the X200 series, which is gearing up for a global launch on 19th November 2024 after its initial Chinese launch in October.
“vivo, one of the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world, is bringing its all-new vivo X200 Pro flagship smartphone range to Africa in collaboration with MediaTek, a global fabless semiconductor company powering over two billion connected devices annually. The collaboration was announced at AfricaCom 2024 in Cape Town,” reads the announcement sent to Hypertext.
While Mediatek nor vivo haven’t outright confirmed that the device will launch in South Africa specifically in the announcement, it’s pretty much a dead giveaway seeing that it was revealed for the continent at Africa Tech Festival 2024 in Cape Town and South Africa is one of vivo’s most lucrative African markets.
One of the biggest highlights of the premium vivo smartphone is its Dimensity 9400 chipset – the chipmaker’s brand new processor for flagship mobiles, primed for AI applications and hardcore gaming performance speed.
It boasts up to 40 percent faster raytracing performance compared to the previous generation, as well as offering a 41 percent peak performance boost with up to 44 percent power saving functionality. This means the chip allows performance on phones to be faster, more consistent and use less battery power than previous generation processors.
As for the vivo X200 Pro launching in Africa, we are set to see the Pro Mini variant and the X200 and Pro models as well.
“As our fourth-generation flagship, the Dimensity 9400 builds on our momentum in the premium segment,” said Rami Osman, director of Business Development for MediaTek Middle East and Africa, who was at the Africa Tech Festival to see the launch of the X200 series.
“It enables manufacturers like vivo to build future-proof devices with next-generation features like Wi-Fi 7 tri-band MLO and on-device generative AI.”
“The tuning of vivo’s BlueChip technology solutions unleashes the performance of the Dimensity 9400 flagship, while achieving excellent power efficiency control. This achieves a balanced state of high efficiency and low power consumption, empowering the vivo X200 Pro with exceptional experiences in performance, power efficiency, gaming, communication, security, imaging, display, and AI,” added Tony Shi, GM of vivo South Africa.
We have reached out to vivo and MediaTek representatives for a more concrete picture around the X200’s local launch, pricing and availability and will provide answers as soon as we hear back.
