- The Associated Press (AP) has declared Donald Trump the winner of the 2024 US Presidential Elections.
- Trump won despite Kamala Harris leading in early voting in recent weeks.
- The Republican candidate won key States like Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, and North Carolina.
This week eligible American citizens went to the voting polls to make their mark in the 2024 US Presidential Elections.
In the months leading up to 5th November, this may have been the most divisive elections to date, with the Associated Press (AP) now calling the results in favour of Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Donald Trump is now the 47th President-elect of the United States of America, and will likely set the political tempo for the rest of the world over the next four years.
While Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who replaced Joe Biden as the preferred candidate a few months before the elections took place, was leading in much of the early voting last week, Trump saw victories in key battleground States like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, and Georgia.
It also appears that local betting companies had better knowledge than most political analysts, with Trump being the odds-on favourite to win the elections.
Along with winning the Presidential race, the Republican Party has also won the majority of seats in the US Senate and House of Representatives.
When you factor in that Donald Trump has been instrumental in getting new Supreme Court Justices elected during his previous term as US President, and with two more Justices nearing the rumoured retirement, this latest election has proved a critical win for the Republicans.
Of more interest to South Africans will be how relations with Trump will be impacted given our ties to BRICS, not to mention our role in legal proceedings with Israel over its war with Palestine.
The next four years will be quite tense politically speaking, especially as the United States sets the tone for industries across the globe.
Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on 20th January 2025.
