- In little more than a week, Bluesky has added one million users to its base.
- Perhaps most impressive is that by Tuesday new user signups were at 700 000.
- X users appear to be exploring alternatives given that Elon Musk and Donald Trump are now besties.
Since the US elections crowned Donald Trump the new President Elect of the United States, users from X have started to migrate to Bluesky.
The Twitter/X alternative’s user base has been growing steadily thanks to several missteps on X’s part. By the end of October the platform had some 13 million users and since last week, it has added another million to that figure.
“hello and welcome to the 1M people that have joined Bluesky in the last week,” the official Bluesky account posted late on Tuesday evening. “while Bluesky might look like a familiar app on the surface, behind the scenes it’s designed to always put users first.”
Perhaps most impressive is that just over Tuesday, 300 000 users joined the platform with The Verge reporting on that 700 000 users had joined Bluesky earlier in the day.
It’s very clear that users are moving away from X to alternative. Threads was meant to be that alternative but a severe lack of features coupled with woeful moderation have seen folks joining before quickly going dormant.
As for X, folks are worried that once Trump takes office, X’s owner Elon Musk – who is reportedly spending a lot of time with the President Elect – will turn the platform into another version of Truth Social. In fact, Musk will become the head of the newly minted Department of Government Efficiency per a post by Trump on Truth Social. Yes, the man somehow managed to convince Trump to name a department DOGE. We truly are living in the strangest times.

DOGE will somehow drive efficiency from government from outside of government, according to Trump’s post. How one can be part of government and yet not a part of the government is something we’re still trying to dissect.
With that in mind, it’s clear to see why so many users are joining alternative platforms especially if X is about to become a major purveyor of far-right propaganda where reach can be purchased for a few dollars a month.
Anecdotally, we’re seeing a lot more activity on our personal Bluesky profiles. In fact, the influx of users has our timeline resembling something more akin to the old days of Twitter. Threads meanwhile is suffering from a lack of moderation and few if any major features.
You can sign up for Bluesky here or download the mobile app on your Android or iOS device.
