- Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly working on producing a Mass Effect series.
- Variety reports that Daniel Casey will write and serve as executive producer on the show.
- No details about the direction of the show have been shared as of yet and BioWare didn’t even officially announce this show itself.
While BioWare had told Mass Effect fans to temper their expectations for N7 Day (7th November) it appears as if the studio is planning something big with Amazon.
As reported by Variety, Amazon MGM Studios is working on a Mass Effect series, the latest in a long line of videogame adaptations for the streaming platform. The report reveals that Daniel Casey will write and serve as executive producer on the show. He will be joined by Karim Zreik who will join the executive producer squad under Cedar Tree Productions. The publication adds that Ari Arad and Michael Gamble from EA will also be executive producers.
As for the story that the series will follow, that’s not exactly clear at this stage.
The show could tell a version of the tale the original Mass Effect Trilogy did which would make for compelling viewing. The producers and writers could also take another direction with the property entirely but we’re doubtful that will be the play.
While a show like Fallout told its own story in the wider universe of the game, it had ample fan service which is a requirement to get fans to buy-in to the show. For instance, the Halo show took several liberties with the source material that didn’t land with fans and it was cancelled after a divisive two season run.
Amazon is also working on an adaptation of God of War which recently scooped up a new producer in Ronald Moore. This after several key executive producers and the showrunner departed the project.
We’re hopeful that Amazon can produce a great sci-fi show, it was responsible for The Expanse which is widely hailed as one of the best sci-fi series out there. Granted, that project had the special attention of Jeff Bezos but we live in hope that Amazon MGM Studios can crank out a fantastic adaptation of Mass Effect.
When we’ll see this Mass Effect show is unclear but seeing as a writer and executive producers have just been announced, it could be a while before we even get a first look at the show.
As for N7 day festivities, BioWare has added some Mass Effect treats to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as well as No Man’s Sky and Destiny 2. Aside from that, however, and this project, it seems that BioWare just really wants folks to play Veilguard.
