Wayback Machine up and running again

  • The Internet Archive has confirmed that its Wayback Machine is operational once more.
  • It was impacted by DDoS attacks suffered in October.
  • The Wayback Machine will begin saving pages from 9th October 2024 onwards.

Last month The Internet Archive detailed a crippling series of DDoS attacks that brought its Wayback Machine down.

The attacks potentially resulted in more than 31 million users’ data being stolen, but in the days and weeks since, The Internet Archive appears to be recovering.

To that end, it confirmed that the Wayback Machine is operational once again.

More specifically the ability to save pages has been restored, with it confirming as much with a post on X (formerly Twitter).

As Engadget points out, the Wayback Machine resumed operations in a read-only mode on 14th October.

Now the ability to manually save pages has been restored, with The Internet Archive noting that it will begin collecting web pages from 9th October onwards, which is when the site went down as a result of the aforementioned DDoS attacks.

Whether the service’s security measures are more robust following the downtime, remains to be seen.
