- WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that will share transcripts for voice messages you’ve received.
- It will allow users to read a voice message when they’re unable to listen to it.
- WhatsApp says the transcripts will be fully encrypted, just like all other communications on the platform.
If you, like us, don’t enjoy getting voice message on WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform has unveiled a new feature that will prove very useful.
This as WhatsApp on iOS and Android can now be set to share transcripts of voice messages shortly after you receive them.
While our reason for wanting such a feature is driven by frustration, WhatsApp has a different interpretation.
“There’s something special about hearing your loved one’s voice even when you’re far away. Though sometimes, you’re on the move, in a loud place, or you receive a long voice message that you just can’t stop and listen. For those moments we’re excited to introduce voice message transcripts. Voice messages can be transcribed into text to help you keep up with conversations no matter what you’re doing,” WhatsApp shared in blog post.
“Transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages,” it added for those with any concerns around privacy.
In terms of accessing the feature in your settings, the same set of steps exist for both iOS and Android.
The steps are:
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Turn Voice Message Transcripts on or off.
- When enabling Voice Message Transcripts, select your Transcript Language.
There is, however a difference in the languages that are supported on the different mobile operating systems.
On iOS, WhatsApp says that, “English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic are supported on iOS 16+. The following additional languages are supported on iOS 17+: Danish, Finish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and Thai.”
For Android, only, “English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian” are supported.
“Transcripts are rolling out globally over the coming weeks with a few select languages to start though we plan to add more over the coming months,” WhatsApp concluded.
