- South Africans streamed 560 petabytes of content from DStv this year.
- The most streamed movie was bizarrely Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
- Despite it being an Olympic year, the most streamed sports event was a rugby match between South Africa and Scotland.
South Africans are warming to the idea of DStv stream as evidenced by the fact that revenue from the product increased 71 percent this year.
As you may be aware, DStv Stream is MultiChoice’s streaming solution for those who want DStv but don’t want to purchase a decoder or fuss with a dish installation. The company even makes a set-top box that folks can use to access the streaming service (as well as other apps) although the DStv TV app is available on Android and Apple TV app stores.
Today DStv shared some data about the habits of viewers and they are to be expected, with the exception of the most streamed movie. That movie is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson and Amber Heard. We say its top spot is surprising because the movie has an average review score of 5.6/10 on IMDb while critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes place it at a Rotten average.
The most streamed series on DStv Stream was Yellowstone which is to be expected given the acclaim the show draws. The show is in its fifth and final season but the story of the Dutton family lives on in not one but two prequels and two spinoffs that are in development. It’s a great if somewhat violent show. Looking at local shows, My Brother’s Keeper was the most streamed show. The Mzansi Magic creation was also nominated for four South African Film and Television Awards, including Most Popular TV Soap or Telenovela.
Of course one of the main reasons folks still subscribe to DStv is for the sport. One would think that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games would top the charts but the most streamed sports event was South Africa versus Scotland playing Rugby at Murrayfield on 10th November. We suppose watching the Springboks trounce a team is a national pass time so it’s little wonder it beat the Olympic Games.
MultiChoice reports that all tallied up, South Africans streamed 560 petabytes of content, the equivalent of 215 million movies at 1.3GB per hour.
We really wish DStv would change its stance on concurrent streams. As it stands only one stream to a TV or PC and one mobile stream is allowed at a time and that’s just terrible.
The broadcaster is still offering customers DStv Premium at R699 per month for 12 months but you must pay for a year upfront and sign up via WhatsApp. You can find out more about that here.
