Assassin’s Creed Shadows in development hell as it’s hit with another delay

  • Ubisoft has announced a second delay to its highly anticipated yet divisive Assassin’s Creed Shadows game.
  • The upcoming title was initially set to launch in November of 2024 and was then pushed back to February 2025.
  • The developer/publisher says it remains “committed to delivering a high-quality, immersive experience”.

Ubisoft is really struggling to launch its latest AAA title – Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The upcoming game, set in feudal era Japan, has been mired in controversy ever since it was first announced, with issues ranging from historical accuracy, character design, and first impressions of gameplay.

Now the latest blow to the game comes in the form of another delay. We say another as Assassin’s Creed Shadows was initially set for a cross-platform release on 12th November 2024, with the developer/publisher even buoyantly taking pre-orders for the game before a frame of gameplay was revealed to the world.

That confidence, it would seem, was not well founded, as Ubisoft took the decision to push its release out into early 2025 – 14th February to be precise. Those hoping to enjoy their Valentine’s Day hacking down enemies as Yasuke or Naoe will now have to wait until 20th March to do so.

Whether Ubisoft will be able to meet the newly advised release date, remains to be seen, but the fact that it has already offered refunds on those who have pre-ordered the game, does not bode well.

Still, Ubisoft still feels confident it can deliver a good game.

“Since November, we’ve been thrilled to share our progress through Gameplay Overviews, and the overwhelming excitement has truly inspired us. Each week has brought valuable feedback from our community. While we’ve already made remarkable strides, we believe a few additional weeks are needed to implement that feedback and ensure an even more ambitious and engaging day-one experience,” wrote spokesperson Marc-Alexis Coté in an update.

“We remain committed to delivering a high-quality, immersive experience—fostered by ongoing dialogue between our players and development teams. We know you’re eager to learn more about Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and we’re excited to share that more updates will be coming your way very soon,” he concluded.

With so much riding on the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows given the recent financial and work culture issues at Ubisoft, this may be make or break for the developer/publisher.
