- Several separate games, including the beloved Balatro, have posted sales numbers.
- Balatro and Mortal Kombat 1 both sold five million.
- Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has sold one million.
Over the past few hours several games have coincidentally announced sales numbers that are all quite impressive, with Balatro and Mortal Kombat 1 espousing over five million each, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader with a smaller but still very impressive one million.
The Balatro reveal is great because it is not just about the success of the game, but it encourages other people to give indie titles a chance –
“The last few weeks have been pretty wild. To everyone who picked up Balatro after seeing it at @thegameawards, we hope you’re having an amazing time with it! If this is your first time picking up an indie title, try to make it a habit! There’s some amazing stuff out there!” reads the announcement on Twitter / X.
Also announcing sales figures on Twitter / X is Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon. Over the course of several Tweets (or whatever they’re called now), Boon tries to address conversations in the zeitgeist right now around the success or Mortal Kombat 1.
That thread starts here and covers a lot of ground including DLC characters, crossovers, esports events and more. The most interesting part, however, is the reveal of the five million sales revealed in part four of seven of his posts.
“With over 5 million games sold, seeing Mortal Kombat 1 still in the top 15 most played Playstation 5 games makes us very grateful to Mortal Kombat fans. Thanks for continuing to support NetherRealm Studios games!” Boon writes while also providing this image.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has also celebrated a million milestone. Launched in December 2023, Rogue Trader was generally well received by both Warhammer 40K fans and those looking for this kind of RPG experience.
“Abelard, announce that over 1 million Lord Captains have claimed their Warrant of Trade and ventured boldly into the Koronus Expanse! To be the paragon of Humanity, unbroken by adversity, to walk bravely first into darkness, to unite and reclaim what was lost, to triumph over nightmares untold, to hold boldly the reins of fate, to walk steadily the road of thorns, through pain to greatness. This was no easy task, but you have succeeded, Lord Captains. The Emperor protects!” the announcement on Steam states.
Finally, just as we were wrapping up this story, a game we’d never heard of also announced the sale of two million copies. That game is Needy Streamer Overload which is also called Needy Girl Overdose depending on your region. Its sales announcement was also done over X (formerly Twitter) in Japanese.
We’re not quite sure why so many games big and small from developers all over the world chose the past few hours to make sales announcements, but it’s always fun to get a peak into this usually secretive part of gaming.
