Godzilla encounters are still frustratingly rare in Fortnite

  • Players can take control of Godzilla inside of Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode.
  • This in-game event is not present in every game.
  • The likelihood of Godzilla appearing was as low as 20 percent.

Over the weekend those who played the ever-popular Battle Royale mode in Fortnite had a chance to have a unique Monsterverse experience as Godzilla could appear in their matches. Once per game a portal can appear during the earlier parts of the match allowing one lucky person to become the big G.

With this immense power the Godzilla player can rampage through the map picking up kills while the normal players try to bring them down. Unfortunately, from our experience, this is frustratingly rare.

We played around 10 matches of the Battle Royale over the weekend to try and battle as or against Godzilla inside of the Battle Royale and the radioactive lizard didn’t show his scaly face once. Is Godzilla really that rare, or did we get unlucky?

It’s a known fact that Godzilla is not meant to show up all the time, but what do the raw numbers say? According to Fortnite fan accounts which analyse every aspect of the game, Godzilla only had a 20 percent chance to spawn. A hotfix to the game increased this by doubling the odds, bringing the spawn rate up to 40 percent.

Despite this increase, as mentioned, we didn’t get a Godzilla in any of our games. We can’t help but feel like this is a real miss by Epic Games as those with even less time to play have a smaller chance for this to happen, and an even lesser opportunity to be the first one at the portal to play as Godzilla.

This is on top of the irritations of this event being inside of the Battle Royale. As it’s still a free for all, there’s nothing stopping players from killing each other instead of fighting against Godzilla or using the portal spawn point as a way to farm kills.

We’d have loved for Godzilla to be some kind of separate mode to the Battle Royale where the spawn rate is 100 percent and we could have enjoyed the new mechanics around this all the time. Unfortunately, with Battle Royale still the main draw of Fortnite as a whole, this didn’t happen.

Lastly it’s worth mentioning King Kong here (or just “Kong” as he’s officially named in the Monsterverse). Kong isn’t playable during the Titan Takedown event, but he is included in the marketing for this event – you can see him sharing space in the key art of the announcement trailer below – so what’s going on?

For games that will spawn a Godzilla portla, Kong will arrive while players are still on the Battle Bus. He spawns in, drops Monarch-branded supply crate s for players, and then runs away through his own portal. Some players have captured this on video, with one example watchable here.
