Live service God of War game canned by Sony

  • Sony has reportedly axed any plans to develop live service games for two of its exclusive PlayStation titles.
  • The one we know about is God of War, while the other is unconfirmed.
  • Last year, Sony revealed that it was working on as many as 12 live service games.

Sony giveth and it taketh away. This week we saw God of War Raganarok added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, as well as a trailer for its live-action Until Dawn movie, but now reports suggest that plans for a pair of live service games have been cancelled.

One has been confirmed to have involved Kratos’ God of War universe, while the other is unknown at this stage.

The report comes via Bloomberg (paywall), with Jason Schreier noting that Days Gone developer Bend Games was working on one of the live service titles, although which specific property it was focusing on has not been shared.

Schreier also reported that Bluepoint Games was working on the God of War live service offering, adding that the studio was working on it, “for the last couple of years” too.

BREAKING: PlayStation has canceled two more live-service games, from subsidiaries Bend and Bluepoint, Bloomberg has learned.Fans have long wondered what Bluepoint has been working on for the last couple of years. I can report it was a live-service God of War game. www.bloomberg.com/news/article…

How much of this was influenced by the poor performance and ultimate shuttering of the studio behind Overwatch clone, Concord, is unclear for now, but it seems like the dozen or so live service games that PlayStation was reportedly developing last year, are now been whittled down to only a handful.

This is a pity too, as a live service game within the recent Norse-influenced God of War universe would have been interesting, and at the very least, whetting more appetites than Concord did.

The same goes for a Days Gone live service game, especially as fans of the PlayStation exclusive title have been calling out for a sequel or something more than that particular post-apocalyptic zombie offering.

While it is sad to hear that two live service prospects have now been cancelled, perhaps more importantly, Sony has confirmed that neither Bend Games nor Bluepoint Games will be closed, which is a fate that Concord’s Firewalk Studios could not avoid.

To that end, it is now in discussions with both studios to determine that their next projects for Sony will be.
