Olympic silver medalist and future track star partners with Huawei

  • Huawei Mobile South Africa has announced its latest partnership with a local athlete – Bayanda Walaza.
  • He recently won a silver Olympic medal for the 4x100m relay with team South Africa in Paris.
  • Walaza was unveiled as a new partner during Huawei’s local launch for the Nova 13 series.

With a storied history when it comes to sponsoring and partnering with local athletes, Huawei Mobile South Africa has unveiled its latest collaboration with future track star Bayanda Walaza.

Many may remember Walaza from last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, where he was a part of the 4x100m South African relay team that won silver. Along with that recent accolade, Walaza is also the youngest South African Olympic medalist, and he also won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre events at World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru last year.

Needless to say, he is a star on the rise, which makes it easy to see why Huawei was so keen to partner with him.

“Partnering with Bayanda is a proud moment for Huawei. His journey has only begun, but his legacy of excellence is already cemented and mirrors our commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries,” explained Peter Feng, GM of Huawei South Africa Consumer Business Group.

Walaza was unveiled as a new partner during Huawei’s launch event for the new mid-range Nova 13 series on Thursday night.

“Huawei represents more than just technology, they stand for innovation and improving lives. This partnership reflects my personal commitment to encourage South Africans to live healthier and more fulfilling lives,” said Bayanda of the partnership.

He is not the only Olympian that Huawei has worked with of late, with the company also announcing a partnership with Tatjana Smith last year as part of the local launch of the Pura 70 series.

While it remains to be seen what the partnership will yield down the line, it is clear that Huawei is identifying up-and-coming local talent and is eager to collaborate with them.

You can watch Walaza win the 100 metres U20 title in the video below, which should be the first of many accolades for this promising young talent.
