South Africa’s most streamed content for 2024 is actually surprising

JustWatch has shared the most popular shows and films streamed in South Africa for 2024.
Oppenheimer was the most streamed movie while The Rookie took the spot of most streamed series.
Showmax was the platform of choice, filling up most spots on both lists.

Aggregator JustWatch has released a report on the most streamed movies and series in South Africa for the entirety of 2024 and the lists are hold some interesting nuggets of information about local viewing habits.

In 2024 South Africans said “to hell with it” and streamed all three hours of Oppenheimer more than any other film that year, with Civil War coming in at second place. It seems Showmax is the streaming platform of choice for locals to get their at home film fix as the pieces of content from the MultiChoice platform appeared more than any other on the list.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video came in at second, but didn’t feature nearly as much with Apple TV Plus only getting one nod for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. One surprising inclusion in the list is Godzilla Minus One, a film entirely in Japanese.

It was the eighth most streamed film in South Africa for 2024, more than other Monsterverse films from Legendary.

As for the most streamed series last year in South Africa, the super watchable The Rookie took the top spot on Netflix and Showmax, with Yellowstone following at second place also on both platforms.

Yellowstone likely made it to the top from word of mouth alone because seemingly no-one can shut up about it. While another surprising ranking is Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout, based on the series of videogames.

While Fallout 3 and 4 were super popular titles, the inclusion of Fallout at third place for the year suggests that it broke through to casual viewers. The show has already been greenlit for a second season and it was Amazon Prime Video’s biggest streaming series in the country last year.

Like films, Showmax was the go-to streaming platform for series, seeing four of the top 10 shows in 2024.
