Truecaller on iOS now on par with its Android counterpart

  • Truecaller has announced its biggest ever update for iOS, which should be welcome news for iPhone owners.
  • All of Truecaller’s spam and scam blocking abilities are available to iPhone users everywhere.
  • The significant update is made possible by Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup framework.

Truecaller continues to be a popular app as spam calling still plagues society regardless of what measures regulators try to put in place with legislation like PoPIA. That said, the mobile experience has not always been the same, with the Android version being more powerful than Truecaller on iOS.

That changed this week, however, as Truecaller announced the biggest update for iPhone to date.

“The new update now offers the entire might of Truecaller’s spam and scam blocking abilities to iPhone users everywhere! It now has the ability to identify all types of calls making it at par with its Android counterpart,” the company explained in a release shared with Hypertext.

“This is made possible by Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup framework, developed especially for apps like Truecaller to provide live caller ID in a privacy-preserving way. This API uses state-of-the-art homomorphic encryption and Truecaller is the first in the world to deploy this at scale for Caller ID,” it continued.

Moving forward, the company says its latest AI-powered capabilities and global database will be leveraged to identify as many calls as possible on iOS, while also ensuring that no call goes unidentified on an iPhone running its app.

Added to this, the latest update includes automatic blocking of spam calls, which is a feature that iPhone users have requested for some time now. Other enhancements include the ability to search for previously identified calls, which can go as far back as 2 000 previous numbers in the Recents list in the iOS app.

Truecaller on iPhone also includes the ability to subscribe for a Premium Family plan, where you can share all Premium benefits with up to four additional people at a monthly or annual price.

This update to the app also requires setting up in iOS 18.2. To do so, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • “Make sure you are on Truecaller for iPhone version 14.0 or later.
  • Open iPhone Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
  • Here, enable all Truecaller switches and open the Truecaller app again.”
