- Android users finally have an Apple TV app for the operating system.
- Until now Android users have had to watch Apple TV+ content through a browser.
- This move could help Apple TV+ reach more customers who want to watch the likes of Severance, Ted Lasso and other fantastic shows.
Android users can finally watch Apple TV+ content through an official Apple TV app for their devices.
The Apple TV app for Android launched on the Google Play Store on Wednesday and is compatible with tablets, smartphones and foldables. While some regions will now also have access to the Major League Soccer Season Pass, the real draw here is a way to natively watch the wide catalogue of content on Apple TV+.
Until now, Android users were forced to use a browser to watch content on Apple TV+. That would be fine if the platform didn’t have one of, if not the worst, interfaces we’ve ever encountered. We’re curious to see if this app improves the experience outside of Apple’s ecosystem.
Over the years the Cupertino firm has amassed a raft of fantastic TV shows including Slow Horses, Foundation, Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest and Severance which has folks in a chokehold during its second season. There are also a number of great films including Wolfs, CODA and Killers of the Flower Moon among others.
“Following its launch on November 1, 2019, Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries, and series have been honored with 538 wins and 2,553 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy Ted Lasso and historic Oscar Best Picture winner CODA,” the company said in a press release.
You can sign up for a free seven day trial for Apple TV+ and there after a subscription costs R124.99 per month. Like most streaming services, you can watch content online or download content to watch offline.
The fact that Apple has waited this long to launch an app for its streaming platform is odd but also telling. Despite its great content, Apple TV+ only has a 9 percent share of the streaming market which Amazon and Netflix dominate.
Launching an app for Android tells us that Apple is looking to to broaden the reach of the streaming platform which we hope works if only to be able to talk to more people about Bad Monkey.
