DStv launches promo to upgrade subscriptions, with some caveats

  • MultiChoice is offering its Access and Compact customers the chance to experience its Premium subscription package as part of a new promotion.
  • Should they pay an additional R100 on top of their current subscription, they will gain access to the full DStv Premium bouquet.
  • There are, however, some caveats in terms of who qualifies for the promotion.

It has been a busy week at MultiChoice, with Canal+ making an offer to acquire the remainder of its shares, but on the content side of things, it has announced a new promotion for DStv customers wanting to upgrade or at the very least experience what the next subscription tier up is like for a short while.

The promotion will allow Access and Compact subscribers to upgrade their package for R100 extra once-off.

Here customers must make full payment of their DStv account, including an additional R100, via any partnering store, the MyDStv app, DStv WhatsApp number (060 060 3788), or its website. From there, the upgrade will be processed automatically within 48 hours, according to MultiChoice.

To clarify, Access customers who settle and pay R100 extra will be upgraded to Compact, while Compact customers will be upgraded to Premium for doing the same.

DStv Access customers “upsizing” to Compact will gain access to:

  • “Sports: Betway Premiership matches, Premier League action, and more football coverage.
  • Local entertainment: Reality favourites Uthando Nes’thembu, My Brother’s Keeper, Icala, and 1802: Love Defies Time.
  • Lifestyle and reality: Rachel Khoo’s Simple Pleasures and the British dating reality show Find Me A Match.
  • Big Brother Mzansi: Follow all the latest drama from the Housemates.
  • New reality content: Social media star Skomota in his own show on Moja Love.
  • Crime documentaries: The Fall of Diddy, Chris Brown: A History of Violence, and Feuds Turned Fatal.”

DStv Compact customers “upsizing” to Premium will gain access to:

  • “Sports: Live coverage of the SA20 finale, Vodacom United Rugby Championship, ICC Champions Trophy, and a rematch between UFC champion Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland.
  • Series: The star-studded spy thriller The Day of the Jackal, the highly anticipated The White Lotus Season 3, and Suits: LA.
  • Lifestyle and reality: Kyk Wie Praat, Kokkedoor, and an array of movies on dedicated M-Net Movie channels.
  • Documentaries: Fascinating titles such as Prison Chronicles, Secrets of the Brain, and Ramses: The Great King of Ancient Egypt.”

There are a few other elements to keep in mind, with the following elements leading to non-eligibility:

  • “Active decoder customers who downgrade to Compact and/or Access between 5 February and 31 March.
  • Customers on a contract.
  • Customers who pay annually.
  • Customers with a streaming only subscription.”

With Access costing from R139 per month and Compact from R469 per month, it will be interesting to see whether customers would be willing to experience a higher tier for R100, or indeed whether they will chose to update full-time after a taste.

It is clearly the latest push from MultiChoice to gain more customers on its higher priced subscription plans, but there are several caveats you should consider before proceeding with a DStv upgrade.
