Gulf of Mexico is now Gulf of America (kind of)

  • Google Maps has complied with President Donald Trump’s order, and renamed the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Any US citizen searching for the region in Google Maps will now see the Gulf of America displayed.
  • This only applies to the US, as the correct name still displays for those outside of the United States.

Instead of addressing the country’s ailing economy or strengthening ties with other nations, one of the first orders signed by President Donald Trump was to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

While most of the world tried to point out that historically the region was known as the Gulf of Mexico for decades, Trump pushed ahead with the renaming, and Google said it would comply with the order for its Maps app as this was part of its standard policy and procedure.

“When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” it shared in a post on X.

Now the change has indeed happen, with many users and publications in the States noting that when they search for the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America is displayed instead.

For those in South Africa and other parts of the globe, however, the look is a little different. Searching for the region in Google Maps still displays the Gulf of Mexico, but the Gulf of America appears in brackets thereafter (as seen in the header image above).

As for Mount McKinley, based on our own search, it still displays the mountain peak as Denali, which is what it was changed to in 2015.

Why this is the case, remains unclear for now, but of the two name changes that Trump has ordered, this is the less contentious of the two, especially as the Gulf of Mexico is of importance to the US in terms of its economic status, oil supply lines, and trade route.

Interestingly, as The Verge points out, Apple has not made the same change to its Maps app. While it is certainly far less popular and less used than Google Maps, it seems like Apple is still holding firm on this matter, or at the very least, sees no point in making the change official for its ecosystem.

Waze, which is owned by Google, serves up both names if you search for Gulf of Mexico, but yields nothing if you reach Gulf of America on its platform. Either way confusion reigns, and should a Democratic candidate be elected president after Trump’s second term ends, we wonder if a series of name changes will be first on the to-do list.
