- HONOR has confirmed that its AI Deepfake Detection will be available from April onwards globally.
- The feature was first announced as a part of MagicOS 9.0 last October.
- It is described as an “industry-first” and seeks to protect HONOR phone users from scams.
In October last year, HONOR announced a number of AI-focused features that were built into the latest iteration of its mobile operating system – MagicOS 9.0. One of the more intriguing features was AI Deepfake Detection, but it was limited to use in China only at the time.
Now HONOR has confirmed that the AI-powered feature will be rolling out globally from April onwards.
“This cutting-edge feature empowers users to combat the growing threat of deepfakes. Using AI-powered real-time analysis of video and image content, it provides immediate warnings against potential deepfake contents,” noted HONOR in a release shared with Hypertext.
“HONOR’s proprietary AI Deepfake Detection technology analyses subtle inconsistencies often invisible to the human eye, including pixel-level synthetic imperfections, border compositing artifacts, inter-frame continuity, and consistency in face-to-ear hairstyle and facial features. Upon detecting manipulated content, a warning will be immediately issued to safeguard users from the potential risk of deepfake,” it explained of the technology.
While it remains to be seen when in April the feature will be available to South African HONOR users, it should be noted that not all devices the company sells locally will support MagicOS 9.0. To that end, only a handful of flagship models have been listed as receiving the operating system via an update.
These include the:
- HONOR Magic6 Pro,
- HONOR 200 Pro,
- HONOR 200.
The Magic7 series is listed too, but we are yet to know whether this lineup is destined for South African shores. With MWC25 set to happen in less than a week, we should get an update from HONOR on that front.
As AI becomes more pervasive and difficult for humans to detect, we would not be surprised to see more of these on-device AI-powered features being brought to more smartphones by other companies. For now, HONOR is the first.
