How much more you’ll be paying at toll gates in March 2025

  • Toll gates across South Africa will become more expensive on 1st March 2025.
  • SANRAL is looking to implement a nearly five percent increase in toll tariffs.
  • It says the tariff hikes are in line with the consumer price index and are essential for road maintenance.

Motorists are already paying more to drive on South African roads this year than last, with a two-month streak in petrol price hikes, and now SANRAL is set to increase the price of toll gate tariffs effective from 1st March 2025.

The price hikes will sweep across the country’s toll gates, seeing a 4.84 percent increase, which SANRAL is saying is at least less than the 6.25 percent adjustment it implemented last year. The tariff increase is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), obtained from Stats SA.

CPI is a measure that tracks changes in the average price of a basket of goods and services over time. It reflects the cost of living and is used to assess inflation in a country. Therefore a R20 toll tariff in February will become R20.97 as of March.

SANRAL’s general manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, says that revenues from toll gates are essential for road maintenance, operation of crews and for upgrades to roads across the country.

“The funds go a long way towards ensuring that SANRAL fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to the lives of South African citizens,” they said, adding that “SANRAL is empathetic to the South African public, considering the current state of the economy. However, it is equally important to introduce the adjustments to ensure that the agency continues to deliver safe and quality roads.”

While it is still to early to gauge what the official petrol price for March will be, we can see from current data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) which is used to establish the official prices by the Department of Mineral Resources, that South Africa is likely headed for another price hike next month.

This month, all grades of fuels became more expensive by almost R1, with the price of both grades of diesel seeing price increase of over R1 per litre.
