Today, 14th February is Valentine’s Day and if you’d prefer not to hand over your savings account to a restaurant – or like us you forgot to plan something – takeout with a good movie is always a great option.
There is no shortage of romantic comedies to choose from for Valentine’s Day and we’ve selected a few that will prevent you and your partner from scrolling through the endless options available before watching something you’ve already seen.
We have tried not to stretch the definition of “romantic comedy” too far, but frankly, Hollywood does. For instance, while searching through the various categories Apple TV+’s The Gorge popped up. Sure, the two leads played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy seem to develop a relationship, but the movie is about the gates to Hell.
Happiness for Beginners – Netflix
Ellie Kemper plays divorcee Helen who takes part in a wilderness survival course lead by Jake, played by Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes, her brother’s best friend. The rails come off very quickly to fuel the laughs but the story is heart-warming and you’ll definitely feel a little lighter by the end of the movie.
Fly Me to the Moon – Apple TV+
Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson star in this clever take on the Apollo 11 mission is a great choice if you or your partner is a bit a of a space nerd. Fly Me to the Moon tells the story of the mission to the Moon but with the twist of it also being about said Moon landing being faked. This actually serves as a rather great vehicle for a romance tale and it’s equal parts funny and endearing.
Hit Man – Netflix
Hit Man, no not that one, not that one either, stars Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a college professor and part-time hit man. That second one is a stretch through as Johnson pretends to be a hit man in order to arrest folks trying to solicit murder. Ultimately Johnson meets Madison Figueroa Masters played by Adria Arjona. Believing he is a hit man, Masters tries to solicit his services but the two end up falling in love instead. Be forewarned, this movie ramps up quickly so if you’re averse to violence, give this a miss.
Anyone But You – Netflix
It’s a double whammy of Glen Powell this time as Ben who meets and falls for Sydney Sweeney’s Beatrice before they both decide they actually hate each other. The pair are thrust together at a destination wedding to Australia and the angst between the pair nearly ruins everything. Anyone But You is classic rom-com fodder with a predictable ending and plain, albeit it well delivered, dialogue. The cast is also easy on the eyes which makes some of the more questionable moments easier to digest.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy – In Cinemas
If you aren’t up for more superhero schlock this weekend, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy hits the circuit today. Hugh Grant and Renée Zellweger reprise their long running roles in this film.
“Bridget Jones navigates life as a widow and single mum with the help of her family, friends, and former lover, Daniel. Back to work and on the apps, she’s pursued by a younger man and maybe – just maybe – her son’s science teacher,” reads the film’s synopsis.
You’re either going to rush out to watch this or avoid it like the plague not matter what any review says. As it is Valentine’s Day though, we’re almost certain this will be a safe bet.
Safer than The Gorge will be at least.
