- Canon has revealed an update to its entry-level camera in the EOS R lineup, with the EOS R50 V seeing the light of day.
- It has removed the electronic viewfinder to allow for a more compact body.
- It has also received an improvement in its video capabilities, handling up to 4K at 60fps.
Canon has revealed a rather interesting 2025 update to one of its more affordable entry-level EOS R mirrorless cameras in the form of the EOS R50 V.
An update to the 2023 iteration, the EOS R50 V features a number of design changes and performance enhancements compared to its predecessor.
For one, it is in a smaller body, thanks to removing the electronic viewfinder. The result is a mirrorless camera that measures 69.6mm (diameter) x 62mm (length) and tips the scale at only 181g for the body only.
Canon is also gearing this new offering to content creators, and video content creators in particular. To that end, the video capabilities have been improved compared to the 2023 model, with up to 4K at 60fps video recording being supported.
Added to this is the ability to operate well in a vertical orientation, so it’s clear that this specific camera is made for TikTokers wanting to upgrade their setup.
“As a product made for today’s video content creator, it comes equipped with both a vertical and horizontal tripod mount. These are available on the side of the camera’s grip, and also on the bottom of the camera body. When in Movie mode, the on-screen menu’s automatically rotate based on the camera’s orientation,” explained Canon.
As for the lens kit which comes standard on the EOS R50 V, an RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ ultra wide-angle lens is present, which is described by Canon as “lightweight, travel friendly” by the Japanese camera maker.
Shifting to the sensor and the technology paired with it, a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor is found like that of the original EOS R50, along with Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II system with focus breathing compensation, which is a feature of the PowerShot V1 too, so again the content creator focus is clear to see.
Other noteworthy elements to mention include a 3″ touchscreen on the rear, which serves in place of the dedicated viewfinder, as well as space for a mic, headphone, and an E3 remote port. Added to this is support for four different livestream modes,
No local availability or pricing has been shared at the time of writing, but Stateside the EOS R50 V is listed at $849.99 (~R15 529) with the aforementioned lens kit, and it is expected to land in the US next month. The body alone is $649.99 (~R11 875) for those wanting a different lens to fit.
