HBO announces The Last of Us S3 before the second season even airs

  • The Last of Us Season two arrives next week, but HBO has already announced that there will be a third season of the series.
  • This suggests that HBO has split the second game into more parts to squeeze more value from the property.
  • South Africans can watch the show online via Showmax from Monday onward.

The Last of Us season two arrives next week, but before it has even hit streaming, a third season has been confirmed.

With season one covering the events of the first game from Press X to Start to the end credits, the second season will seemingly only cover part of the second game. At least, that’s the only explanation that makes sense unless the showrunners intend to pull a Game of Thrones and write their own third season.

Right now, we know nothing about this third season. We don’t even know what the second season will include. All we really have to go on is a vague post on X.

We do have some clues about what will happen in season two thanks to comments from executive producer Craig Mazin.

“Whatever positive relationship they’ve had is now clearly strained,” Mazin says speaking of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). “Joel is going to therapy to figure out how to deal with what he thinks – or I should say, what he hopes – is a standard, ‘I’ve got a 19 year old kid who’s wanting independence, turning away and rejecting Dad.'”

The trailer also gives us an idea of how the show will deviate from the game in some instances, which gives those who have played through the game a reason to give this season a watch.

The first episode of The Last of Us Season 2 drops on M-net (DStv Channel 101) at 21:00 on 14th April, and new episodes will come out every Monday thereafter. It’s not clear when the episodes will hit Showmax, but it promised they will come to the streaming platform.

Speaking of the game, The Last of Us Complete is now available for PlayStation 5. This is, as the name suggests, the complete series, including The Last of Us Part II Remastered. This will be good for new PlayStation 5 owners who don’t have both games and feel the urge to finally dive into the games on the back of season two.

We can’t deny that The Last of Us was a great franchise, but the endless new versions of the game and a third season of the show feels a bit like HBO, Sony, and Naughty Dog are trying to squeeze everything they can from this franchise. We suppose that’s just the nature of things, but it feels a bit tasteless to our mind.
