Netflix comes down with a bout of Wrestlemania this month

  • Netflix South Africa says that Wrestlemania 2025 will be livestreamed on the platform this month.
  • This will be the first time WWE content will be available to stream on Netflix since the platform took ownership of the brand.
  • There are a host of documentaries and new seasons of well-loved shows arriving this month on Netflix for those interested.

Netflix has revealed the highlights of its release schedule for this month, and curiously, Wrestlemania is listed as a live event happening this month.

While Netflix owns the WWE, the platform doesn’t allow South Africans to access that content, likely because SuperSport has the exclusive broadcast rights for all things WWE in South Africa. This is why we’re surprised to see that Netflix South Africa told us via email that Wrestlemania 2025 (Wrestlemania 41) would be broadcast on the platform on 19th April.

The event is being billed as one of Netflix’s global events, so we suspect that trumps MultiChoice’s longstanding deal with the WWE.

Some of the fights scheduled for Wrestlemania 41 include Cody Rhodes fighting John Cena for the title of Undisputed WWE Champion. Roman Reigns, CM Punk and Seth Rollins will take part in a Triple Threat Match, and IYO SKY and Bianca Belair will decide who becomes the Women’s World Champion.

The event is taking place in Las Vegas, and while it’s billed as a two-day affair, Netflix has only mentioned one of those days, that being 19th April.

Other Netflix content scheduled to hit the air this month includes the highly anticipated seventh season of Black Mirror. This season is set to feature a “sequel” to one of the most lauded episodes in the the series, USS Callister. With reality often being more bizarre than reality, Charlie Booker and co. are going to have to pull out all the stops to make this Black Mirror one to remember. Black Mirror Season 7 launched on 10th April.

There’s also a new Chef’s Table coming to Netflix under the banner of “Legends”. This doccie will celebrate the likes of Jamie Oliver, José Andrés, Alice Waters, and Thomas Keller, who Netflix describes as having changed the way the world eats.

Also headed to Netflix this month is Penn Badgley who takes up the role of Joe Goldberg in You, one last time. The book lover/stalker/serial killer returns to New York after piling up bodies further East and in Europe and, we’re curious to see how Joe’s story ends. We’re hoping for something deserving of a man that has killed more people than he’s loved so, no pressure Netflix.

While there is a lot of content coming to Netflix this month, very little jumps out at us. There is a Devil May Cry series headed to the platform, but we suspect that may only appeal to fans of the long-running videogame series. There are also a ton of documentaries heading to the streaming behemoth, including Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which promises to uncover the poorly kept secret of “abuse and exploitation within the world of child influencers”.

A Netflix subscription starts at R49 per month, but this limits users to a single, 480p stream on smartphones, no computer or TV streaming is allowed. The Basic package costs R99 per month and ups the quality to 720p but only one stream at a time.
