Over analysing the Destiny 2 Edge of Fate teaser because we can

  • On 6th May, Bungie will reveal the next content drop for Destiny 2, The Edge of Fate.
  • A teaser for the reveal event heavily implies that Destiny players will finally be leaving the Sol solar system for some reason or another.
  • A bit of text in the teaser suggests players may be headed for one of the many planets that are named Kepler.

On Tuesday, Bungie dropped a teaser for something it’s calling The Edge of Fate.

It’s not clear whether this is a new content drop or the name of the next expansion which has been known as Codename: Frontiers until now. Unfortunately we’ll only get our answers in a few weeks on 6th May when Bungie hosts a reveal event. The reveal event will feature this Edge of Fate content.

Ahead of that we received a 15 second clip that we naturally slowed-down, replayed and scrubbed through second-by-second to see if we could spot anything of note. The good news is we did.

The video opens with a view of what we believe is Sol. We can see Saturn’s rings, the purplish hue of Neptune and what looks to be Earth. We then see a Guardian’s jumpship flying toward, and then past, The Reef before we’re shown a satellite that is pulsing with energy.

The energy coursing through the satellite reminds us of the opening of Destiny 2, in which we had to restore our connection to the Traveler. Given that the Traveler is now dead following the events of The Final Shape, we wonder if Bungie will introduce a new hope of reviving our orbtastic in-game God.

We are then shown a display that is tough to read given that the satellite was likely hit by a tiny asteroid. The display appears to be cycling toward 6 May 2025 – the reveal event’s date – but we’re just making an informed guess.

We then see the Guardian jumpship spiralling through space in what seems to be a pop-culture mainstay of signalling “we’re travelling at hyper speed through space now”. Perhaps players will use the power of Strand to make this journey given the green colour seen during the clip.

We the arrive at a planet that has a hole punched through it. At first we thought this may be Lubrae, the home planet of Rhulk, the first disciple of the Witness. In the lore we learn that Rhulk reversed a mechanism that was powered by Lubrae’s so-called Sapphiric Sun destroying the Sun and leading to Lubrae cracking apart. The imagery in the teaser features a planet brimming with blue – one could say Sapphiric – light.

Adding further fuel to this thinking, Bungie itself mentioned last year that in-game the Vanguard had sent a probe to Lubrae after discovering its location. We’re not saying this is definitely Lubrae but the possibility is there.

We then get a shot of Earth, (or at least we think it’s Earth given the blue water, hazy atmosphere and orange Sun) enveloped in a green ring with the symbols of The Nine imposed atop the planet.

And then the biggest clue is dropped. Right at the end of the trailer you can see “.15 Keple”. in the top right corner.

Bungie loves using real astronomy in its game and we suspect that partial phrase may be Kepler-15. That would be a bizarre choice though because Keplar-15 is a star that is orbited by a single planet – Kepler-15b. Kepler-15b is described as a “hot Jupiter” so it’s not exactly primed for life and Bungie isn’t about to make players suspend their disbelief enough to have them walking on a gas giant.

However, Kepler is a rather common name for a host of planets, many of which are believed to be Earth-like in some way or another. Planets sharing this name were spotted using the Kepler Space Telescope hence the wide array of planets with the name. It’s possible that Bungie is sending players to one of these although which is impossible to say.

But it’s clear that Bungie is hinting at the possibility of players finally leaving our solar system in the Edge of Fate. This has us intrigued and having been uninterested in Destiny since The Final Shape wrapped, that’s a big deal. A new solar system to explore would give Bungie room to dream up both new enemies and new big bads that players can chase for another decade so it matters little which system we go to and more that we simply exit the same “area” players have been in since day one.

Thankfully the reveal event is just two weeks away. You’ll be able to watch the event on Twitch here and YouTube as well.
