SPEEDRUN – SA PlayStation 5 prices not immune to tariff woes

At the weekend Sony decided that the PlayStation 5 needed a price increase and unfortunately, that price increase will hit South Africa as well. According to a local representative, “SIE is increasing the Retail price due to the challenging economic environment including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.” If the 25 percent increase holds true locally as it does in other parts of the world, the base price of a PS5 could rise to R16 200.

Speaking of tariffs, President Donald Trump’s administration backtracked on adding tariffs to several categories of electronics. This after Trump put tariffs into effect then hit pause for 90 days but not before entering into what is best described as a tariff war with China. Electronics from China will still garner a 20 percent tariff but not the 145 percent tariff imposed on China.

Despite these tariffs on one of the major electronics and tech makers in the world, US firms continue to shovel coal into the machine. Apple is reportedly preparing to release two new Vision Pro headsets. Despite the first iteration not selling well, these two new models will seemingly address the major concerns highlighted by users.
